WHAT ARE OPTICAL FIBRE WALL-BOXES?

Optical Fibre Wall-boxes are a compact, low-profile and discreet way to terminate and distribute multi-way fibre-optic cables in an indoor environment – for example a cable running between floors or between buildings in a campus environment. Incoming cables may be brought into the box from top or bottom and spliced – either onto pigtails for local patching or onto multiple cables for distribution.

SINGLEMODE OR MULTIMODE?

The choice of multimode (and its OM1, OM2, OM3 and OM4 variants) or Singlemode pigtails will be decided by the type of cable to be terminated, which in turn will be dictated by the type of equipment using the link. In general, shorter / lower speed data links may be constructed in multimode, with Singlemode reserved for faster or longer links.

CONNECTORS OR NO CONNECTORS?

Your choice of patching wall box or connector-free Building Flexibility Point will be influenced by the manner in which the data links in your plant cable are to be used. If the wall box is the end of a link between, for example, computer rooms in two buildings, and all the circuits will be used within the room, then a connectorised solution will be the preferred choice. From here, patch leads or other terminated cables may be used to connect to the various equipment. Conversely, if the wall box is at the end of a cable carrying links destined for separate floors or rooms within a building – or even separate local buildings, then a BFP may make more sense. Here, the backbone cable may be terminated onto a number of other lower fibre-count cables which will finally be terminated at their respective destinations.
